How to: Ironing Delicate Fabrics

In this day of wash-and-wear, it can be tough to remember which fabric takes what ironing setting and steamers can be frustrating.

If you're working with a delicate fabric and have no time to look up its specifics, try this:

  1. Heat your iron to a mid-level setting.

  2. Lay the fabric out flat on your ironing board.

  3. Place another piece of fabric over it. I usually use something cotton like a pillowcase.

  4. Run the iron over the cover then check the fabric beneath to ensure it's still safe.

  5. If it is, continue ironing a few strokes at a time, then pausing so the delicate fabric won't be overheated.

  6. You may need to flip the delicate fabric, re-cover it with the pillowcase, and iron that side.
